These guitars were made by my father. There are only a few of them so far. They are called YUG (which translates as “the south”) or Yura's Guitars — my father’s name is Yuri.

Some of the early wistful and melancholic guitar parts were inspired by Electrelane and Erlend Øye’s band, The Whitest Boy Alive, especially the song “Burning.” Their debut album reached Russia on a pirated CD in 2006. Before that, I had already been listening to Kings of Convenience and Erlend’s solo album, but what impressed me most here was the way he blended melodic electronic music with acoustic elements. Later, in 2011, we even met in person. Erlend came to one of our concerts and afterwards told me that I could use more than two chords and that it would be better to talk to the audience between songs. I still haven’t followed any of that advice.
Another significant influence was an Mp3 CD I bought from a music collector in Kaliningrad, I think it was in 2005, featuring different C86, twee, indie pop acts from all over the world (there were many Scandinavian acts such as: Studio, The Boat Club, The Embassy, The Bridal Shop, and The Tough Alliance; including many of the bands mentioned later). Plus, I discovered the band Horse Shoes on MySpace in 2008. It was a project by Jacob Graham, one of the members of The Drums, and Drew Diver, who later played bass in The Embassy and guitar in Selebrities.
We started exchanging messages with Drew and sharing links to different music and discovered a common interest in bands such as The Chills, The Wake, The Field Mice, The Clean, The Orchids, Saint Etienne, Days, The Bats, The Durutti Column, The Go-Betweens, and many others.
All these expanded my musical horizons at the time and shaped my approach to songwriting. In 2011, the same label run by Jacob Graham that released Horse Shoes — Holiday Records — released the song “One Moment” (although this particular song actually features the so-called “heroic” melodies).
It’s primarily an intuitive approach to playing. The melodies avoid complex jazz and blues phrasing. There are no rock riffs or bends. Instead, I tend to use expressive melodic inflections, sustained phrase endings, and simple melodic motifs that could just as easily be played on wind instruments such as a flute.
It’s essential to play five-string guitars instead of the usual six-string ones (without first E-string). At our early shows, I played a standard six-string guitar. Then the high E string broke, and I realized I didn’t really need it for this kind of music, so I never put a new one on. I got used to playing with five strings and eventually started asking every guitarist who joined the band to do the same.
In terms of effects, it’s just a touch of delay and some hall reverb. No distortion, no fuzz, no overdrive.

I’ve been a fan of The Velvet Underground for many years, and Moe Tucker was my first drum influence. I used to copy her style whenever I had the opportunity to play drums in the rehearsal room. To me, drums are the most enjoyable instrument to play.
Jaki Liebezeit from Can had a huge impact on the drumming style of Motorama. Drawing on African traditional rhythms, minimalism, and the avant-garde, he developed his own distinctive style — motorik. There is a symbolic connection between the band’s name and this drumming style.
Emma Gaze from Electrelane was also an influence — simple, repetitive krautrock drumming. Motorama’s song “To the South” is a reference to Electrelane’s song “To the East.”
Technically, for drum parts, I either record my own drum loops at home, or use sample libraries or drum machines.

I like this type of music. There is no point in abandoning something that has been developed over many years. Order, stability, consistency, and a gradual introduction of new elements. In our case, all of these stand in opposition to conformity to external trends, impulsiveness, and haste.
